Gian Piero Gasperini refused to speak with the media and Atalanta director Umberto Marino lashed out angrily at the DAZN refereeing expert after the draw with Juventus. ‘They were clearly a red card and a penalty.’

La Dea thought they had won it and leapfrogged Juve into fourth place when Ruslan Malinovskyi unleashed his ferocious left-foot strike into the far top corner.

However, after Hans Hateboer hit the crossbar from point-blank range on another Malinovskyi assist, Danilo got his head to a Paulo Dybala corner to snatch the equaliser in stoppages.

There were protests in the first half when Wojciech Szczesny came rushing out to close down Teun Koopmeiners, but made little contact and Leonardo Bonucci cleared Luis Muriel’s finish off the line.

After that, Jeremie Boga also saw his shot charged down by Matthijs de Ligt, who had his arm raised, but the ball hit his ribs and armpit.

Coach Gasperini refused to speak to the media, sending instead director general Marino, who disagreed completely with the analysis given by former referee Luca Marelli.

“I can only say it is fortunate that Marelli is no longer a referee,” Marino told DAZN, visibly furious.

“We have a completely different view of the incident. That is inevitably a red card, and De Ligt’s handball was also a penalty.

“Let’s be serious, let us comment on the incidents for how they are read in other games as well as this. I say that was a red card and a penalty, both are clear.”

Marino did eventually get round to discussing the match itself and probably Atalanta’s best performance in several weeks.

“It was a very good performance from Atalanta, we always had the right spirit, but have been lacking good luck lately. We must praise those who played today, as they showed against a great Juventus that they were on the same level.

“Let us not forget this was a Juventus side that was unbeaten in Serie A for 12-13 rounds.”

There was another positive from the game, specifically the performance of January signing Jeremie Boga.

“Clearly, the teams we come up against know us better, so we needed that change of pace that would surprise and make the difference. We invested a great deal in Boga and believe he can give a big contribution to Atalanta.

“It’s more difficult compared to past seasons for Atalanta to create chances, because the opponents study us now and defend in a different way.”

Atalanta have a game in hand, so technically could still be in front of Juventus in fourth place.

“I still see teams like Fiorentina, Lazio and Roma who could catch up to fourth place, so it remains wide open.”

  1. The Sczesny incident was not even a foul. He never made any contact with the Atalanta player neither did he handle the ball (yellow card offence).

Where did they spot a red card?
    Did we watch different games??

  2. Sczesney is clearly late and fouls Teun Koopmeiners after he plays the ball. Can the ref call the foul without giving the red in such a situation? I’m also curious to why the suspect handball is not showing in the replay, I believe I saw it strike de Ligt’s arm, perhaps after it struck another body part, either way it seems it wasn’t reviewed properly. I think it’s fair to mention Hateboers reckless tackle and Vlahovic’s dive too. Atalanta unlucky not to win it.

  3. @angelo, I am not Italian but I have followed football long enough. If those clubs that you mentioned are bigger than Milan then everything is wrong with Italian football. 55 scudetti between with 5 champions league? Same number with Maldini that says it all.

  4. Gabbs you have to learn the history of Italian football first and foremost with all due respect. Milan only became really big during the late 80’s and early 90’s as they were the Man City of the world, spending crazy money at that time and bringing much success. Within the peninsula Juve and Inter are historically bigger including the amount of fans that they both have. The Derby d’Italia is given that name as it represents the two biggest clubs from a historic point of view.

  5. What else can you expect from dirty Rube? They will get that 4th spot, by hook or by crook, just like they did last season

  6. Szcesny red card? Really?))))) There was no penalty during de Ligts recoschet rib to arm ball. So was no penalty on Vlahovic. Reffery was right tonoght. Juve were the better team with more strikes and better chances, even if the majority here does not agree – the stats numbers speek for themselves. But Malinovsky’s goal was fantastic. The guy knows how to score against Juve. 1-1 is fair, it’s more Juve missing 2 points than Atalanta.

  7. @Angelo, maybe you need some educating on how Inter even came to be at all…. Plus if Milan only became big in the 80s, whatever happened to the 2UCL victories before then with your supposed big clubs having ZERO

  8. Where did the THREE added minutes come from?? First half ONE minute added the added time even went to almost FOUR minutes!! Atalanta triumph with proper time add ons. The punces at Old Bag ALWAYS ger extra minutes added if behind and they almost always get late penalties to save them. With De Light what was different to when De Roon and Muriel were were unfairly penalised in Turin a season or two ago??

  9. Ros… you have a BIRD’S name!! As it stands the AGGREGATE score between the two is Atalanta 2-1. no zapata too who is extremely important to the entire Atalanta squad. Cheesny should have been dismissed its very very similar to what Muso was dismissed for just one week fa. ERrven BeInSport commentators stated clearly that Cheesny was very fortunate. Also De Light well every game against Atalanta he gets away with dodgy things I mean was his arm/hand ball any different to that for De Roon and Muriel against the OLD Bag a few seasons ago?? Neither should have been given but they were given because its the Old Bag punces and VAR deciders grew up supporting them OR a Milan side!!

  10. @angelo, I have been following serie a for 36 years now, I am not a kid at all. Milan got a rich owner quite alright, and was in tatters when Silvio but bought her but was never smaller. The first Italian team to gain international recognition is Milan gave Italy her first champions league and first ballan dor. Besides, Milan had 10 scudetti already when bought by Silvio. In all the only Italian team that’s loved and respected with huge international appeal is Milan and the real Italian pride.

  11. Dear Atalanta, Please dont turn into sore losers like Napoli. Everything in the game was fair and square. It is even questionable was it a foul at all by Szczesny since he was pulling out and the attacker spread his leg towards the goalie’s groin. Even if foul existed, it cannot be red but yellow at best since there were two defenders closing and the ref gave advantage to Muriel.
De licht was hit into te ribs and he never extended arms to make himself wider since it was from a side.
Even if you were right, every time when Juve is included everyone rise the noise. There were numerous terrible ref’s decisions along the season in other matches and nobody is talking about it, but when something even little bit suspicious happen with Juve you show it like end of world.
Refs are humans and they make the mistakes, but even VAR rejected your claims.

  12. Being fairly impartial (Didn’t really care who won/lost). I would say Szczesny should have gotten a yellow as there was cover around him and that was not a penalty for de Licht even though his hand was in a dangerous position. All in all Juve were lucky but this did not quite live up to conspiracy.

  13. had the ball went in after Szczesny incident they would have complained why the referee blew the whistle and not let the advantage ball… anyways there was nothing wrong with keeper intervention he tried to chest the ball. Had it been another player, the referee would have no problem penalizing Atalanta player for high heels, but the referee ducked under the pressure from Atalanta players and the crowd.

  14. Corrieredellosport:
    “Neither red nor yellow
Szczesny leaves the area, Koopmeiners touches the ball but then plants his left foot in the belly of the goalkeeper: Atalanta asks for red, there is none, but not even yellow. If we really want to, it’s a foul for Juve, the goalkeeper does nothing to commit infractions.”

  15. Szczesny clearly got beaten to the ball by Koopmeiners, and clattered into the latter. Koopmeiners boot was extended because he had played the ball before getting bundled into by the GK. Any other comment is not acceptable. Vlahovic clearly dived in the penalty area, he should consider himself really lucky no to get a second yellow. I also mentioned Hateboer and Hernandez-Barella elbow to be impartial in this discussion unlike certain others.

  16. Never mind me, I just want to ask what @Angelo is smoking cause that has to be the good stuff.

Milan became big in 80s and comparing them to Man City LMAO

I think you’ve been smoking your way through the 80s and 90s, with all due respect.

  17. @Milan Fan, yes that is correct Milan were relegated twice before Silvio came along. The First was the Totonero scandal of 1980 and then they were back down in 1982. FAX boy, learn it and keep quiet !!! Secondly they were the City or PSG of that era as Lentini was a world record fee for a club back in those days. Like it or not Rube and Inter are the two most dominant clubs in Italy domestically. Look at Milan now. They cannot keep hold of their so called best players and do not have the clout to compete with Rube or Inter. Milan are doing very well for the budget that they have but if you cannot even defeat Porto just once how can you keep clinging to this CL nonsense. That was way back in the past and this year you finished bottom. FAX

  18. I swear I read the comments and I’m convinced most people know nothing about this sport. The Szczesny incident is at most a yellow, it never struck his hand, he clips koopmeiners with 2 defenders directly next to him. Also, asking for a red just furthers the fact that there’s constantly a witch hunt against us.

Then there’s “handball” incident with De Ligt, the ball strikes him in his armpit… ARMPIT. If we’re going to consider that a handball then we might as well start playing volleyball.

FINALLY, they want to talk about red cards??? Someone go show this useless excuse for a director the studded tackle from Hateboer on De Sciglio then we can talk about red cards

  19. @ Angelo

Thanks for educating me on my own favorite club’s history lol

Milan were relegated twice before Silvio came along, so? You fail to mention they had also won 10 Scudetto, 4 Coppa (most of the domestic trophies they have today!) plus 2 Champions League and 2 Cup Winners’ Cup before he came along. So how did Milan became big in 80s exactly?! LMAO

Milan were relegated in 1980 because of a scandal just as Juventus in 2006, Are we going to call Juventus a small team now, too? lol

Inter have 32 domestic titles to Milan’s 30, 19 Scudetto to Milan’s 18 (and one of them was gifted to them off the pitch, mind you) if that’s your idea of dominant then you’re not right in the head.

So, honestly, the only “FAX” I learned here is that I think you’re still smoking but don’t want to share.

  20. watson
The Musso red card was a clear foul Don’t even try comparing apples to oranges. And your name does not have anything to do with the great Dr. Watson, as you preffer personal attacks instead of focusing on the point. You’re just another jealous Juve hater
