Gian Piero Gasperini criticised the referee Tobias Stieler after the match and the Italian newspapers claim the German ‘changed the game’.

Freuler was sorry after the match and posted his apology on Twitter.

“There’s not much to say,” he wrote. “I’m very sorry and I want to apologise to the squad, the fans and all Atalantini.

“But I don’t want to talk about the incident. We are still alive thanks to the lads who have played a great match in 10.

“I’m sure we will play a great match in Madrid.”

Berat Djimsiti was the first to respond of the players and offered his support to the Swiss midfielder.

“There’s nothing to apologise for,” he replied. “We are a squad, one for all and all for one.”

Dutch midfielder Marten de Roon added: “Bro, don’t ask sorry to us. Nothing to apologise for.”
