Atalanta and Argentina goalkeeper Juan Musso has successfully had surgery to insert metal plaques and screws, stabilising the facial fracture he sustained in a clash of heads with his teammate.
The incident occurred during the opening minutes of Sunday’s 1-0 Serie A victory at the Stadio Olimpico.
He rushed off his line and collided heavily with teammate Merih Demiral, coming off far worse with a fractured cheekbone.
Musso remained in hospital overnight for observation and today had the surgery that stabilised the compression fracture, which affected the cheekbone, orbital bone and right jaw.
The operation, performed by Professor Bruno Andrea Pesucci and Dr Vincenzo Marcelli, at the Villa Stuart clinic in Rome was a complete success.
Musso has also had to pull out of international duty, where Argentina have friendlies coming up against Honduras and Jamaica.
It is not yet clear whether this will rule him out of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar in November.
