Atalanta and Argentina international goalkeeper Juan Musso will have surgery tomorrow after suffering a fractured cheekbone and head trauma.
The incident occurred in the opening minutes of Sunday’s 1-0 Serie A victory away to Roma at the Stadio Olimpico.
It was an accidental clash of heads with Musso’s teammate, defender Merih Demiral, and the goalkeeper came off far worse.
He immediately seemed very dazed and had a large swelling over his cheekbone.
Musso was taken to the nearby Policlinico Gemelli hospital in Rome, where X-Rays confirmed a fractured cheekbone, as well as head trauma.
The player will have surgery tomorrow to reduce the fracture, so remains in hospital overnight for observation, but he is said to be conscious and lucid.
It also means the 28-year-old will have to pull out of next week’s international friendlies that Argentina are set to play against Honduras and Jamaica.
However, it should hopefully not affect his participation in the 2022 World Cup in November.
