Former Manchester United striker Anthony Martial is among the candidates for Atalanta now that Gianluca Scamacca is ruled out for six months.

The Italy international fell awkwardly during yesterday’s 4-1 friendly defeat to Parma and it immediately looked serious.

Tests today confirmed the rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee and Scamacca is not expected back on the pitch until well into 2025.

With that in mind, and the possible sale of El Bilal Toure too, La Dea need a new centre-forward on the transfer market.

According to Sky Sports News UK, one of the most intriguing options is Martial.

Martial available for free

The 28-year-old is currently a free agent after his contract with Manchester United was allowed to run down and he had also been linked with a potential Serie A move for newly-promoted Como, while Juventus were tracking him last year.

Atalanta would suit him more, especially as they are in the Champions League and will face Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup on August 14.

The Frenchman had been a huge star in the making when Manchester United paid €60m to sign him from AS Monaco in 2015, but it never quite worked for him and his contract expired on June 30.

Martial has a few options, including a return to France for Lille, MLS, Brazil or the Saudi Pro League.

He was linked with Olympique Marseille and Besiktas, but does not seem keen on those moves.

Another interesting option suggested in the Italian media today is Giovanni Simeone, who is struggling for playing time at Napoli.
