Atalanta published an appeal from the local health authority not to gather in groups, hug or chant close to others during COVID-19 lockdown measures.
However, not everyone got the message, as there were reportedly at least 1,000 fans around the Gewiss Stadium several hours before kick-off.
Similarly to recent big games involving Inter, Milan, Lazio and others, fans gathered outside the arena or the training ground to show their love for the team.
It has been almost a full year since games have had to be played behind closed doors due to COVID.
The Atalanta fans also placed a message on the gates, a recipe for how to beat Real Madrid.
“Cafeteros + Grappa, let’s get them drunk!”
Cafeteros is the nickname for Colombians, such as strikers Luis Muriel and Duvan Zapata, while grappa is a potent Italian alcoholic drink.
Mixed together, they make a drink called Caffè Corretto.
