Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini praises Lee Congerton for signing Ademola Lookman from Leicester City last summer: ‘He knew him…’

The 25-year-old joined La Dea for €9m in August and has proved to be worth every penny, having scored 13 goals in 19 appearances, including two against Juventus tonight, plus one assist.

During his post-match press conference at the Allianz Stadium, attended by Football Italia, Gasperini praised Atalanta director Lee Congerton for signing the Nigeria international and Rasmus Højlund another brilliant summer deal for La Dea.

“This new director, the responsible for scouting, Lee Congerton spotted these players, he knew him [Lookman] because they were together at Leicester City,” said Gasperini.

“He was quick for Højlund, the club made an important investment in this lad. The club bought these two players who have been helping me work well.”

Højlund, 19, signed for Atalanta for €17m and has scored five goals in 16 appearances this season. His contract at the Gewiss Stadium expires in June 2027.

Atalanta collected a 3-3 draw against Juventus in Turin tonight and are now two points behind a Champions League spot. La Dea has scored 37 goals in 19 Serie A matches, conceding 23.
