Atalanta midfielder Remo Freuler insists his team believe they can win the Champions League, ‘otherwise we wouldn’t even bother going to Lisbon’.

The Scudetto seems just out of Atalanta’s reach after a 1-1 draw with Milan last night, but Freuler is backing them to push Juventus even harder next season.

“Before the season started, I told [President] Luca Percassi that we were stronger than last year,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“We managed to take the next step, confirming qualification for the Champions League.

“As for the Scudetto, it’s always difficult to talk beforehand. We want to pick up as many points as possible, but if we play like we have this season, anything is possible.”

The Switzerland international was then asked about life under Gian Piero Gasperini and whether he was still happy in Bergamo.

“I absolutely haven’t ever worked like this before. It’s tough with Gasperini.

“If an offer comes in for then it’s a different matter, but I’m happy at Atalanta.

“When we reached the Champions League, I absolutely didn’t think about leaving and I still have a long contract here.

“I’m happy here, even if you never know in football.”

Atalanta face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarter-finals, as part of a ‘Final Eight’ format in Lisbon…

“They’re three knockout games. We can beat anyone over a single leg. We believe in our chances, of course, otherwise we wouldn’t even bother going to Lisbon.”
