Atalanta have announced they are set to expand their only recently renovated Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo to 25,000 seats.

The arena was previously known as the Stadio Comunale and then the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia before Atalanta purchased it in 2017, becoming only the fifth club in Italy to own and operate their own stadium after Juventus, Reggina, Udinese and Frosinone.

The existing structure was completely revamped and completed in 2022 with a capacity of 21,300 seats.

However, that was only phase one of the project, as CEO Luca Percassi confirmed during Atalanta’s Christmas dinner last night that they had signed an agreement to complete the final works on the Curva Sud by September 2024.

“The team, fans and city will have the stadium they deserve with 25,000 seats.”

The Corriere della Sera claims this will include a small gym underneath the Curva Nord, so the squad can warm up and hear the fans just before games.

The corridors leading from the locker rooms to the pitch will also have images representing Atalanta success stories and the fans of the Curva Nord holding up their scarves and flags.

Before the work was completed, Atalanta had to play their UEFA games at Sassuolo‘s Mapei Stadium and the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in Milan, as the old Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia did not meet European standards.
