Gian Piero Gasperini will meet with the Atalanta owners to discuss his present and future, as both acknowledge they need to ‘be in sync’ on what is expected.

La Dea finished the season in fifth place and qualified for the Europa League, having missed out on continental competition entirely last term.

However, the coach repeatedly said in interviews over the last few weeks that he felt disappointed with the media reaction to fifth position, with suggestions they were supposed to challenge for the Champions League or even the Scudetto positions.

“We have not met up yet, but we have always had a frank and honest relationship,” Luca Percassi told Sky Sport Italia.

“We’ve been working together here for seven years and that is a long time, but we are reasonable people. The coach has a contract, but our rapport goes beyond contractual obligations.

“The club will explain the objectives to the coach, well aware the transfer market is always a difficult time. This union has always bred good results and we want to hear what he has to say, hoping we can find common ground in going forward.

“It’s only right that we meet up and ensure we are both in sync.”

Gasperini would have no shortage of offers if he did leave Atalanta after seven years, because Juventus fans see him as an alternative to Max Allegri, while Napoli need a new coach after Luciano Spalletti decided to walk away.

He specialises in achieving results with a low budget, bringing youth players up through the academy and then selling them on at a premium.
