Davide Astori admits the Champions League is presently “out of Fiorentina’s reach” but is confident his side “are always growing”.
Fiorentina are unbeaten in their last five games but lie some eight points behind Serie A’s top three, albeit with a game in hand on Milan, and Astori believes it would be wrong to look so far up the table.
“We remain convinced by the path we’re taking,” the defender told Corriere Florentino.

“We remain convinced by the path we’re taking,” the defender told Corriere Florentino.
“We’re finding our balance and the game that we like to play. In Europe, for example, compared to last year, we’ve done very little wrong. Our problems now are partly the same as last season.
“We’ve lost players that are made for Serie A like Alonso, Pasqual, Roncaglia and Kuba. Many new faces have come in, some of them potentially great, but we have to adapt.
“Me being a leader? I’m feeling more and more responsibility, also because I’m playing regularly.
“I like being a reference point, even if I have to be tough. My experience at Roma helped me a lot in this regard.
“My only regret is that I didn’t impose myself more. My outburst against Empoli? For me, it was a sin to throw away such a spectacular season, but it was all over within a week.
“How far can Fiorentina go? The minimum objective is to establish ourselves in Europe. Last season, we suffered from the weight of expectation.
“If we talk about the Champions League, we can tell you that on paper it’s not within our reach, but then again, who knows, we’re always growing.
“We’re working better now than last season. To the fans, I tell them to stay calm. They’re in good hands.”
