As Manchester United loan Amad Diallo to Glasgow Rangers and Robin Gosens heads to Inter, it’s a good reminder of the profit-generating machine that is Atalanta.

Over the last few years, La Dea have not only been consistently in the Champions League and the top four of Serie A, but also churned out new talents that were sold on at massive profits.

If the performance-related bonuses were included, then Diallo would’ve been their biggest ever sale at €41.3m to Manchester United in January 2021.

A year on, the 19-year-old has been sent out on loan to Glasgow Rangers for the rest of the season, having made only one appearance for the senior squad this term.

In truth, the ‘official’ fee paid was €21.3m for the product of the Atalanta academy, whose brother is Sassuolo midfielder Hamed Junior Traore, with up to €20m in various bonuses.

Excluding those bonuses, the biggest sale in Atalanta’s history remains Dejan Kulusevski, as Juventus paid €35m to sign him in January 2020.

Alessandro Bastoni follows to Inter for €31.1m in 2017-18, while Franck Kessie and Andrea Conti both cost Milan €24m.

Bryan Cristante moved to Roma in 2019-20 for €22m, leaving Amad Diallo only sixth in the all-time charts.

Now he’ll be overtaken by Gosens too, who is set to join Inter for €25m plus bonuses, having been purchased from Dutch side Heracles Almelo in the summer of 2017 for €1.17m.

The profits are reinvested only to a degree, because this transfer window Atalanta set their all-time record by purchasing Jeremie Boga from Sassuolo for €22m.

The previous top buys were Luis Muriel for €21.2m from Sevilla and Juan Musso from Udinese for €20m.

  1. @Samy, 1. I found this on FI’s front page. 2. It discusses Kulusevski, who was bought by and is a Juventus player, thus relevant.

And now for my actual comment: Atalanta should be a case study in how to properly run a club.

  2. Probably the best run club in Italy.

If the “big” clubs in Italy were ran like them, they might actually win the occasional European trophy.
