Arsenal’s mission impossible: sign a Serie A star

Fabian Ruiz seems to be the latest Serie A star to snub a move to Arsenal, with the Gunners who signed just three Serie A players from Italy in the last ten years.

Ruiz’s contract at the Stadio Maradona expires in 2023 and Napoli will likely sell him over the summer as contract extension talks with the midfielder’s entourage have led nowhere so far. Tuttosport journalist Raffaele Auriemma has revealed that the Gunners made their offer for the 25-year-old who doesn’t seem interested in moving to North London as he prefers PSG or Real Madrid.

Arsenal dealt Fabian Ruiz transfer blow

Ruiz would become the latest Serie A star to snub a move to Arsenal. Mikel Arteta’s side has tried to sign many players from Italy over the last few years but only managed to get Bologna‘s Takehiro Tomiyasu last summer. The 23-year-old has played 18 games with the Gunners so far this season.

Arsenal’s attempts to get the likes of Manuel Locatelli, Joaquin Correa and Dusan Vlahovic were vain. Locatelli and Vlahovic joined Juventus while Correa swapped Lazio with Inter.

Torreira’s Fiorentina future in doubt: ‘Arsenal still upset for Vlahovic’

The Gunners were in advanced talks to sign Vlahovic in the January transfer window and had reached an agreement in principle with Fiorentina, but the striker picked the Old Lady instead. Lucas Torreira’s agent Pablo Bentancur has revealed that the Gunners are still quite upset because of the collapsed deal.

Arsenal have signed just three Serie A players in the last ten years. Aside from Tomiyasu, they also got Emiliano Viviano from Palermo in 2013 and Lucas Torreira from Samp in 2018. They also signed Mathie Flamini and Stephan Lichtsteiner after their spells at Milan and Juventus, but the midfielder and the defender signed with Arsenal after the end of their contracts in Italy.
