Granit Xhaka’s move to Roma has collapsed and Arsenal will soon announce a contract extension for their captain.

Xhaka seemed on the verge of joining the Giallorossi, who had been in talks with the Gunners for several months.

The 28-year-old was José Mourinho’s transfer priority to strengthen the Giallorossi’s midfield, but Roma and Arsenal never agreed on the player’s transfer fee, while Xhaka had shaken hands with the Giallorossi on his contract.

Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta revealed on Sunday that the Swiss international would not leave the Emirates Stadium and the Gunners will soon announce Xhaka’s contract extension.

Fabrizio Romano reports Xhaka will sign a new deal until 2025 and will receive a pay rise.

An official announcement from the Gunners is expected to be released soon, meaning Roma will have to look elsewhere for their new midfielder.

Thomas Delaney and Teun Koopmeiners have been linked with a move to the Stadio Olimpico, with Mourinho still looking for a new centre midfielder.
