Arsenal are now in the process of completing a move for Spezia defender Jakub Kiwior, showing their continued appreciation of those in Serie A, writes Apollo Heyes.

The Gunners’ first recent foray into Italy came in July 2018, when they added up-and-coming midfielder Lucas Torreira to their squad from Sampdoria for around €28.65m. While things didn’t particularly work out for the Uruguayan, who bounced around on loan before leaving for Galatasaray, it was a sign of Arsenal’s renewed appreciation for Serie A.

Arsenal returned to the Italian peninsula in the summer of 2021, paying Bologna €18.6m for rising talent Takehiro Tomiyasu. The Japanese full back proved himself a reliable and tactically flexible player in Serie A and has grown into something of a fan favourite in North London, being a useful and consistent option on either side of the defence.

In a more infamous light, the Gunners were one of the two clubs in for Serbian striker Dusan Vlahovic in January 2022, competing with Juventus for the Fiorentina man’s signature. The Premier League side were serious about the forward, but ultimately lost out as he chose Turin over London.

Later in the year, Arsenal were rumoured to be considering a move for Scottish left back Aaron Hickey, who had stood out with his promising work at Bologna, before he completed a €16.5m move to Brentford.

Now Arsenal have beaten multiple Serie A clubs to the punch, snapping up talented defender Kiwior from Spezia. Juventus, Napoli and Milan have all been heavily linked with the Pole over the last few months, showing his stock in Italy, and now he looks to be another smart signing by the Premier League leaders.

The Gunners may look to Serie A again soon, with whispers now suggesting that the club are keen to launch another attempt for Vlahovic, 12 months after missing out on the Serb. Juventus are allegedly open to a deal and the 22-year-old could prove to be the difference maker in their quest for Premier League glory.
