Talks between Roma and Arsenal for Ainsley Maitland-Niles have reached an impasse, remembering the same scenario as a few months ago when Granit Xhaka seemed on the verge of joining the Giallorossi.

Roma have made Maitland-Niles their main transfer target for the January transfer window, but even if the Englishman has reached a verbal agreement with the Giallorossi, the two clubs have not yet shaken hands.

According to the latest report of Calciomercato.com, Arsenal want €1m for the player’s loan and €20m for the option to buy.

On the other hand, Roma have offered less than €1m for the player’s temporary move to the Stadio Olimpico and an option to buy for €10m.

The two clubs are also negotiating over the number of appearances needed to make Maitland-Niles’ move permanent in June.

Mourinho’s Roma have been here before. The Special One took charge of the Giallorossi in the summer and had made Xhaka his No.1 target to strengthen Roma’s midfield.

The Swiss international had reached a verbal agreement with the Serie A giants, but Arsenal rejected Roma’s €15m bid, asking for circa €23m.

Roma didn’t meet Arsenal’s demands and Xhaka signed a contract extension until 2024 at the Emirates Stadium.

Mourinho hopes negotiation won’t end the same way this time, but Roma have already identified a possible replacement in Eintracht Frankfurt’s Almamy Touré.
