Former Juventus director Maurizio Arrivabene insists Paulo Dybala’s salary request made it impossible for the club to extend his contract while Angel Di Maria joined the Bianconeri to ‘mentor the youths.’

Arrivabene was among the Juventus’ board members who resigned on November 28 following a financial investigation into the Old Lady by the Turin Prosecutor.

Arrivabene is attending Juventus’ shareholders’ meeting held to approve the financial statement for 2021-22. After a brief speech by Andrea Agnelli, Arrivabene also addressed the club’s shareholders who gathered at the Allianz Stadium this morning.

Arrivabene was appointed by Exor a year ago and has overseen several negotiations, including the one to extend Dybala’s contract and Di Maria’s free transfer from PSG.

“The conditions demanded by Dybala were excessive and would commit the club for many years,” he said.

“Signing a player like Di Maria, who proved his worth at the World Cup, was an opportunity to sign a player for a year mentoring young players. A champion like him, plus young players such as Fagioli and Miretti, we thought it was an important signing.”

Arrivabene continued his speech by saying that Juventus made the most of the opportunity to take part in summer friendlies abroad to get further exposure worldwide. “Our club is Italian but is placed at a global level,” he said.

Maurizio Scanavino has been appointed as Juventus’ new CEO and will formally begin his tenure on January 18, 2023, in Juventus’ first board of directors meeting.
