Around 10 Serie A players are still refusing to take a COVID vaccine ahead of next week’s mandatory ruling.

The latest decree by the Italian government has made it compulsory for those taking part in professional team sports to have a Green Pass in order to compete, meaning players in Serie A, B and C, as well as the top level basketball players, will have to be in possession of the green pass if they want to continue playing.

As reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Italian government is now preparing to make some exceptions to the rule, starting with international competitions. Teams from countries without a mandatory vaccination rule could be allowed to take part without a green pass, so Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League matches could still be played on Italian soil.

The government is also evaluating the situation regarding players who do not have a green pass due to have a vaccine not currently recognised in Italy, such as the Chinese vaccine or the Russian Sputnik.

Italian clubs and the Italian Football Federation are still working to try and convince unvaccinated players to take the jab. Many have been convinced already, with around 10 players still resisting taking the vaccine. One of these is reportedly a Roma first team player and another is likely to be Bologna’s Nicola Sansone, whose social media outburst recently suggested he was anti-vax.
