Argentina’s loss against Saudi Arabia in their World Cup opener means Lionel Scaloni’s men failed to equal Italy’s 37-game unbeaten run.

Roberto Mancini’s Italy remained unbeaten from October 2018 until October 2021 when they faced defeat in a Nations League semi-final against Spain at San Siro.

No other country has ever avoided defeat for a longer spell, but Argentina were close to equalling the Azzurri’s record as they faced Saudi Arabia in their World Cup opener today after an unbeaten run of 36 matches.

The South Americans took the lead through a penalty kick converted by their captain Leo Messi, but Saudia Arabia completed a shocking comeback scoring twice in the space of five minutes in the second half.

Serie A stars Angel Di Maria, Leandro Paredes and Lautaro Martinez started the game and the Inter striker had a goal disallowed.

Argentina will face Mexico and Poland in the next two group-stage games.

  1. Cornish pasties stop with those flags. You should be copying and pasting in the England flag it’s your home nation and they might fluke it off this time.

  2. Saudi Arabia played exceptionally well but God damn, that was also a horror show from Argentina.

And they were supposed to be the favorites.

  3. Mesi need to ask choach to call mbappe neymar ronaldinho iniesta and xavi, he is not cristiano to play with such bad players 🙁

  4. Argentina had no fire in their bellies. Saudi Arabia were so much more up for the game.

At least we still held on to the unbeaten record.

  5. Delighted Italy has the World Unbeaten Record still, the 3 years of hard work still paying off.

Respect to Argentina, what a run they have been on.

    Forza Azzurri

  6. Would have been good if Italy had a friendly with San Marino before the Spanish game, sometimes when they don’t warm up they draw or lose and it costs them, could have been 38, and if Bonucci did not get sent off against Spainit could have been different.
