The former Italy international moved to Liverpool in 2009, but struggled with injuries during his time in England. He has since experienced spells at Juventus and Milan in Serie A, before retiring in 2019 after two more experiences abroad with Sporting CP in Portugal and a season in Spain with UD Las Palmas.
The 36-year-old started his coaching career at Fiorentina’s Under-18 team and was promoted in December to become part of first-team staff, assisting coach Beppe Iachini.
