Fiorentina midfielder Alberto Aquilani is set to leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season, as a renewal looks unlikely.

The former Roma and Liverpool playmaker’s deal with La Viola runs out in June and La Gazzetta dello Sport have reported that any extension is now almost impossible.

The 30-year-old has been at the Stadio Artemio Franchi since 2012, making 77 appearances and scoring 13 goals.

The refusal to offer the central midfielder a new deal will come as a surprise to many, as he has featured regularly under Vincenzo Montella.

This season Aquilani has made 28 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal against Dinamo Minsk, but he has also suffered from some injury problems.
