Fiorentina legend Giancarlo Antognoni has left the club by mutual consent after disagreements with the club hierarchy, it’s reported.

The 67-year-old creative midfielder was a hero when wearing the Viola jersey from 1972 to 1987, returning to the Stadio Franchi as part of the staff when President Rocco Commisso took charge.

However, his position has been increasingly difficult, with disagreements over transfer strategy, the choice of coach and what exactly his role entails.

According to FirenzeViola.it and Sportitalia, today Antognoni met with Fiorentina chiefs and it was decided they should go their separate ways.

He scored 72 goals in 411 appearances for the Tuscan Serie A club and became club manager in 2017.

It has been a chaotic summer for Fiorentina, who hired Gennaro Gattuso to be their new coach, then split by mutual consent just three weeks later.

They eventually replaced him with Vincenzo Italiano after weeks of tense negotiations to buy him out of his Spezia contract.
