The 2019-20 edition of the Campionato Berretti for Under-19 Serie C clubs has been scrapped due to coronavirus.

Youth leagues for U18s and younger age groups had already been terminated, as well as the women’s version of the Campionato Primavera.

Now the Berretti has become the highest-profile men’s division in Italy to suffer the same fate.

A statement released by Lega Pro, which runs the league, explains the decision was taken due to difficulty in completing the season as a result of the country’s COVID-19 lockdown measures and to ensure the safeguarding of young players.

Berretti is essentially the third tier of the Primavera level for U19 players, although it is also open to age-equivalent Serie A and B clubs.

The stance on youth and women’s leagues comes as Serie A is gearing up for a resumption by early June.
