Carlo Ancelotti said last summer that he would have retired if Federico Valverde hadn’t scored at least 10 goals this season and the Uruguay international has already bagged 11 thanks to his brace in the Club World Cup Final on Saturday.

The Italian tactician has become World Champion with Real Madrid, beating Al-Hilal 5-3 in the Club World Cup Final on Saturday.

Two of Madrid’s goals were scored by Fede Valverde and his brace helped Ancelotti win a bet he had made with the 24-year-old at the beginning of the season.

Last summer, Ancelotti revealed at a press conference what he had told the Uruguay international during a training session at Valdebebas:  “If you don’t score 10 goals, I’ll stop coaching at the end of this season.”

Valverde’s brace on Saturday means the 24-year-old has now scored 11 goals in 33 appearances across all competitions this season.

Ancelotti’s contract at the Estadio Bernabeu expires in June 2024, but he revealed last year that he would retire at the end of his spell with the La Liga giants. At least, if it happens, it won’t be Valverde’s fault.
