Former coach and player Ancelotti, who is currently in charge of The Toffees, said he wants the Diavolo to finish on top in 2020-21.

“I hope Milan will win, even if it will be tough,” he told Sky Sport Italia. “Inter are going at a high pace.

“I’m afraid my friend [Inter coach Antonio] Conte will not indulge me in this desire.”

Ancelotti has coached Parma, Juventus, Milan and Napoli in Serie A, and said he continues to follow his previous players who have started their coaching careers.

Gennaro Gattuso is one of them, and the former midfielder replaced Ancelotti at Napoli last season.

“I follow all the players I had,” he said. “Of course, they don’t have the experience I have, but this is a point in their favour because it means they’re younger.

“This world inevitably brings criticism, but they know it better than me and for example, two coaches like [Andrea] Pirlo and Gattuso have everything to solve their problems.

“Every now and then I also speak to them on the phone. A few days ago, I spoke to [Benevento coach] Pippo Inzaghi.

“He is one of those I speak to more often. I’m very attached to him, as to all the players I have coached, especially those from my period with Milan.”
