Aurelio De Laurentiis believes Carlo Ancelotti has been “reborn” at Napoli, and explains players left because they could “only feel like protagonists with the Scudetto”.

Carletto replaced Maurizio Sarri on the bench over the summer, and the Partenopei President is full of praise for him.

“Ancelotti is a great man and Coach,” De Laurentiis noted on Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli.

“This has been like a rebirth for him after many years away from Italy, he’s working with a squad he believes in, with a lot of young talents.

“It didn’t take much to get the team working as he wanted, making Sarri's football his own but also imposing his own football.”

De Laurentiis also discussed the dream of winning the Scudetto.

“Many Azzurri decide to leave because they could only feel like protagonists with the Scudetto, which didn’t arrive.

“I can’t allow that, because for me a league has to be won by the whole squad, the club and the city: it has to be everyone’s success.

“It would be great to win it, but life is beautiful because you win and lose and you have to do either with dignity. And because of that we had to sell.”

Despite that stance, the Napoli owner has been critical of referees and VAR in the past…

“I read Rizzoli's statements about seven or eight errors, and I wonder why it is so complicated to use a technological tool that should help the referees.

“If we have that technology, we can dissect an action, it must be that the VAR himself calls the referee to analyse the images.

“It’s we [clubs] who pay the FIGC and in turn the referees, we are the ones who have to protect our investments and the expectations of the fans.

“We need to create a table, otherwise we will have to intervene personally, maybe even asking for damages, which no one has ever done.

“Did I consider suing last season? I never thought about it, I’m a person who is above suspicion.

“But then we had Calciopoli in our football, so it’s easy to think bad thoughts. We need to find the tools to defend the referees first and foremost.”
