The former Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid boss has been out of work since the Merengues sacked him over the summer, bringing in Rafa Benitez.

He spoke to the Corriere dello Sport newspaper in Italy and gave the biggest indication yet of his future plans.

“The vacation will continue at least until the end of the year. Then I’ll start again,” said the 56-year-old.

“Where will I go? Where they call me. I will talk, evaluate and decide. Up until a few weeks ago I was scared someone would call, but now I feel like I’m getting closer to that comeback.

“At least that is the plan, unless something strange happens. I am ready to get the engine back up and running in January.

“I’d like to go back to the Premier League. It is the ideal environment not for football, but for the ‘game’ around football.

“You can work with the right amount of pressure, the necessary detachment and calm. Before I quit, I’d like to have another experience in England.

“In a while I must start to think about retirement, let’s say in five or six years. When I started out at Reggiana, I’d promised myself to work five or six years and that would be it. That was 25 years ago and I’m still going.”

This could be a suggestion that Ancelotti is prepared to take over at Chelsea should they continue to struggle under Jose Mourinho.

He already won the Premier League title at Stamford Bridge and left fond memories behind.

Ancelotti was also asked who would win the Premier League and Champions League.

“Manchester City in England, as they are the strongest squad and have exceptional quality. As for the Champions League, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Barcelona or PSG.

“My next job on the bench will be in Manchester. I’ve been called to do a charity match in November between an English side and the Rest of the World. They gave me the rest of the world.

“After that I’m heading to San Francisco, as I’ve been invited to a convention of cardiologists. They want me to talk about leadership and new technology in football. Then it’s back to Canada. There’s still a few salmon waiting for me.”
