Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti explains his struggles at Juventus and Napoli, says he voted for Silvio Berlusconi and admits Calciopoli was a ‘positive thing’ for Italian football.
The Italian tactician spoke about his coaching career in Italy with Universo Valdano on Spanish TV.
The former midfielder began his coaching career at Reggiana and Parma and was appointed by Juventus in 1999, but never won the title. His rapport with Juventus fans has never been ideal as most Juve ultras saw the Italian boss as an opponent, given his past at Roma and Milan as a footballer.
“It wasn’t a great experience, but everything was perfectly organised,” said Ancelotti.
“I didn’t have a great time because of my time at Milan and Roma, but I learned a lot at the club.”
Former Juventus boss Luciano Moggi hired him at Juventus and a few years later he was banned from Italian football following the Calciopoli scandal.
“I think it was positive that Italian football was cleaned,” Ancelotti said.
Ancelotti won two Champions League in charge of Milan, where he worked from 2001 until 2009. He had won two more European titles as a player with the Rossoneri at the beginning of the Berlusconi era.
“His target was to win in two years and he made it. We won the European Cup in 1989 and 1990. I even voted for him. He was a genius and he liked to talk to me when I was a coach. He always visited me when things were going well.
“He wanted me to play Kaka, Shevchenko and Inzaghi all together. Some said he was telling me the line-up, but that was a lie. No president has ever told me what to do.”
Ancelotti returned to Italy after almost a decade when Napoli appointed him. He remained at the Stadio San Paolo for one and a half years being sacked in 2019.
“Naples is the best city in the world to go n holiday. I coached in the morning and I’d go out by boat in the afternoon. The first season was positive, but I argued with the club during the second one because of a training retreat that I didn’t want. However, there was no conflict.”
What will he do at the end of his coaching career?
“I will remain a fan of Real Madrid and Milan. I want to become a football coach at a University level. Get a license from UEFA to do something similar, test those in the world of football and see how much they know.
“I’ve got married for a second time and I haven’t had much time to do things together, I want to do more and spend more time with my wife.”
