It’s no surprise for Ancelotti to have become so involved, as the 61-year-old has long worked with charities to raise money and awareness of motor neurone disease.

Specifically, the concern is about ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gherig’s Disease), the version of the condition that is most common among former sportsmen.

The most notable case in Italian football was former Milan and Fiorentina player Stefano Borgonovo, who died aged 49 in 2013.

Ancelotti was teammates with Borgonovo and remains a tireless advocate for his foundation to research the illness.
