Italian tactician Carlo Ancelotti has made history as the most successful manager in the Champions League with 103 victories, surpassing Sir Alex Ferguson.

Don Carlo was already the only man to have won the tournament four times, twice with Milan in 2002-03 and 2006-07, then for Real Madrid in 2013-14 and 2021-22.

He has also now amassed 103 individual wins in the Champions League, beating the record set by Manchester United legend Ferguson, with tonight’s 5-1 result against Celtic at the Bernabeu.

However, that too is up for some debate, as Opta maintain that should not include the victory awarded by UEFA in the 2004-05 derby with Inter.

That game ended in a draw, but Milan received the win afterwards because Inter fans forced it to be stopped by throwing fireworks onto the pitch in protest at their own club.

On the field, Ancelotti has achieved 102 wins and therefore only equalled Ferguson, but he has plenty of time to satisfy Opta statistics too, as Real Madrid topped their group and are heading into the Round of 16.
