Massimo Ambrosini believes Suso could hold the key to whether Milan rubberstamp their return to the Champions League sooner or later.

Suso has not scored or assisted a goal for Milan since January, a run that was extended after their 3-2 defeat to Inter in the Derby della Madonnina before the international break.

“I’d certainly send the fans a message of faith because the team are there for all to see and haven’t hidden away,” Ambrosini told Radio Rossonera.

“Milan have a complicated match at Sampdoria on Sunday, but they could take advantage of a favourable round of fixtures, where a good shove could end up being decisive.

“Milan are in the position they wanted to be in: finishing in the top four won’t be easy, neither is it a foregone conclusion, but certainly they have what it takes to stay in this position, especially if their soloists get back to doing solos, Suso for example.

“Rino is doing something extraordinary this season.”

The Rossoneri have got closer to Juventus this season, but they are still 26 points behind the Old Lady…

“If Juventus are still the benchmark then there’s still a big gap,” admitted the former Italy midfielder.

“However, if we talk about being right behind them then the gap isn’t so big. A rebuilding process began last season, which has continued this year.

“It’s clear that returning to the Champions League would set in motion a process that would allow Milan to improve their squad.”
