Agustin Alvarez reveals he chose Sassuolo over Southampton and Bayer Leverkusen because the Neroverdi are the ‘ideal team to grow.’

The Uruguay starlet landed in Italy on Thursday ahead of his medical with Sassuolo. The Serie A side have signed him for €12m from Peñarol.

Southampton and Bayer Leverkusen had also made offers to sign the 21-year-old, who explained why he chose a move to the Mapei Stadium over England or Spain.

“It’s a nice team for me, ideal for growing and improving. I chose Sassuolo because I like the club and I think it’s the right place for me,” the young striker told Sky Sport Italia.

“I want to prepare and give everything to this team,” he continued.

Alvarez will undergo his medical with Sassuolo in the coming hours before the Neroverdi’s official announcement. He has scored 34 goals in 89 appearances with Peñarol and made his senior Uruguay debut in September 2021.

It remains to be seen if Sassuolo will sell Gianluca Scamacca after the signing of Alvarez.

Scamacca has been linked with PSG and Arsenal and the Ligue 1 giants have already made a €35m bid plus add-ons to secure the services of the Italy international. However, according to Sky Sport Italia, the Nerverdi’s asking price is circa €50m.
