Ex-Fiorentina defender Marcos Alonso regards the Italian league as a 'university for defenders.'

The 25-year-old made 85 appearances for Fiorentina, before joining Chelsea for £24m on transfer deadline day. 

"The Italian league is very competitive,” the former Fiorentina left back told Chelsea’s matchday programme. “Most of the teams are waiting for you and are perfect tactically.

"The Italian league is very competitive,” the former Fiorentina left back told Chelsea’s matchday programme. “Most of the teams are waiting for you and are perfect tactically.

“In addition, they take very good care of themselves physically, so I think that for a defender, a spell in Italy is very important.

"After you go to university you become a master. Serie A is a university for defenders."
