Former Serie A star Matias Almeyda believes Inter striker Lautaro Martinez should not be leaving Inter for Barcelona and adds that he left the Nerazzurri during his playing career because he “was crazy.”

“Lautaro is one of the most complete strikers we have in Argentina,” Almeyda told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“He has everything you want from a striker: physical strength, pace, he can score at any time. He will become a regular starter of Argentina National team.

“Lautaro is one of the most complete strikers we have in Argentina,” Almeyda told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I know Barcelona want him but he is already at a very high level, he is immerged in history. You can’t leave a club like Inter, I did after two years but I was a crazy guy at that time.”

The former Argentina star, who is currently the coach of MLS side S.J. Earthquakes spent two seasons and Inter and three at Lazio during his playing career. The two sides meet at the Olimpico today at 3 pm local time for Serie A matchday 3.

“When I played for Inter against Lazio in 2003 I was sent off by Trefoloni and I pranked him,” Almeyda recounts.

“I took the red card from his hand and I sparked chaos. If one of my players would do it today I’d give him a kicking.”

Almeyda praises Antonio Conte, one of his biggest rivals on the pitch during his playing career: “We have changed, Conte is a top coach now, his teams are winning and immediately recognizable.”

He also has words of praise for the Nerazzurri newcomer Arturo Vidal: “He is stronger than I used to be because he scores more goals, he is a true fighter a leader.”

During his time at Lazio, Almeyda shared the dressing room with Simone Inzaghi: “We were on very good terms, we are different but in sync. I’d never thought he would become a manager as he doesn’t speak a lot.

“To be fair, people used to say the same thing about me. Who would have thought about me coaching? We have learned a lot from Sven-Goran Eriksen, a real master. He was spreading peace in the dressing room, nobody was complaining, it was a miracole, I didn’t know how he did.”
