Max Allegri defends his choices in the semi-final defeat and insists the lack of experience was crucial against serial Europa League winners Sevilla. ‘The details make the difference.’

The Bianconeri had taken the lead at the Sanchez-Pizjuan through Dusan Vlahovic, but were pegged back by a Suso scorcher and in extra time Erik Lamela’s header proved decisive.

It is Sevilla who will go on to face Roma in the Europa League Final in Budapest on May 31.

“When you play these games, the details make the difference and it’s a moment from scoring to conceding,” Allegri told Sky Sport Italia.

“It was a good performance and these are steps the players need to take in order to learn, especially the younger elements. It was a hard-fought game, we could’ve scored to go 2-1 up, made a few mistakes at 1-0 up too, and were penalised by the second goal.

“Anything could’ve happened, they did well to score and we didn’t.”

Allegri said in yesterday’s press conference that the season had been ‘folkloristic’ because of the points penalty that continued to come and go and may well return again on May 22 when the latest tribunal gives its verdict on the capital gains scandal.

It is also the second season in a row that Juventus end completely empty-handed.

“Unfortunately, it has been a difficult season. Nobody was born knowing it all, Sevilla were smart and had a lot of fouls and challenges to slow things down. Now we need to focus on finishing second in Serie A.

“We have to shake off the disappointment and put this energy into improving the points tally we had last season.”

The Juventus coach surprised by picking Moise Kean and Samuel Iling-Junior in the starting XI, so if he believes experience is so important in a semi-final, why did he pick two of the youngest members of the squad?

“I chose Iling and Kean because Sevilla have defenders who struggle with the physicality and pace of those players. It’s a pity we didn’t reach the Final, as the lads deserved it and had more to give in this competition after the season we’ve had.

“Sadly, when you don’t have much international experience, that difference shows. Next season these lads will improve in the details and have learned from this.”

There is more bad news too, as Nicolo’ Fagioli was stretchered off with a suspected fractured clavicle.
