Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri insists he is optimistic that his side can beat Inter in Saturday's Derby della Madonnina.

The Rossoneri have a slender two-point lead over their rivals at the top of Serie A and risk being overtaken if they suffer defeat.

"If they are optimistic, we are more so," Allegri told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Asked to describe what would happen if Milan were to win, he said: "We would go five points clear, actually it would be six points seeing that it's a head-to-head.

"If we were to lose Inter would take a one-point lead with seven games still to play. This game is more important for them than for us. Right now we're fine. Mentally the break has helped us.

"We are two great teams with different characteristics. You can feel that the derby is approaching even if here in Milan it's a derby all year."
