Max Allegri insists Juventus did well in the first half of their 4-0 humiliation against Chelsea, so must focus on the positives after reaching the Champions League Round of 16. ‘We have limitations, there’s no denying it.’

The Bianconeri were already qualified for the Round of 16 and this was a head-to-head for first place, but after winning 1-0 in Turin through a Federico Chiesa strike, they were simply torn to shreds at Stamford Bridge.

The reigning Champions League holders ran riot with goals from Trevor Chalobah, Reece James, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Timo Werner.

Only Alvaro Morata really threatened, his chip denied by a Thiago Silva goal-line clearance at 1-0, and Weston McKennie forced the one real save.

Champions League | Chelsea 4-0 Juventus: Bianconeri get the blues

This was a humiliation for Juventus, who had not lost by four clear goals in all competition since a 4-0 Serie A defeat to Roma in February 2004 and suffered their worst ever Champions League defeat.

“I think the first half was good. After the break, they continued their press, while we were a bit too weak on the second and third goals,” Allegri told Sky Sport Italia.

“We allowed a few too many corners, where they are strong physically. We had a few situations where we could’ve done better. It’s disappointing to concede four goals, but the objective was achieved and now we must think about Saturday’s game with Atalanta.

“There were moments when we gave the ball away too cheaply by trying to make vertical passes too quickly rather than keeping the ball. We do that often and need to work on that, because you can’t do it against the reigning champions of Europe.

“The team was by no means bad in the first half. After the break, we lost confidence after the errors for the second and third goals.”

Romelu Lukaku was on the bench this evening with an ankle issue, so Chelsea used Christian Pulisic as a False 9 in a more versatile trident attack. Did Lukaku’s presence in the first leg make it easier for Juventus to defend against?

“It’s not that it made it easier, it’s that they had a completely different tactical approach. We were much more focused with our defending for 90 minutes in Turin, whereas here we rather let go after 45,” replied Allegri.

“In any case, we have qualified with two games to spare and can now focus on the next match. Today I congratulated the lads on reaching the Champions League Round of 16.

“It’s not as if after beating Lazio we have become the best team in Europe. We have limitations, there’s no denying it, and we will work on them to improve.”

  1. No you have limitations. From the start of the match we were just playing for 0-0 and hoping to get something on the counter. How can we even counter when Bentancur and Rabiot cannot do anything from pass, defend, dribble and drive forward. No contract for Dybala, sell De Ligt and rebuild everything and yes Allegri out. I was willing to give Pirlo a chance as he had an excuse. But Allegri for all his experience has not seen or learnt anything. How can you go to the Bridge and play negatively from the blow of the whistle.

  2. all the juv players seem didn’t play like a pro player, just like that

After conceded more and more they started to getting frustrated and lose themselves

This is like first team against primavera team so 4-0 is absolutely deserved result

  3. It cant be blamed on Alegri. The midfield simply isn’t good enough. There is no player like Pirlo, Zidane, Deschamps, Davids, Nedved who can take the ball in midfield, hold onto it with Chelsea players pressuring him , and then turn and play a pass. And Morata just isnt good enough. Juve basically have some good defenders and Chiesa. Thats it, Need to make signings in January or it could be Europa League football next season.

  4. man everyone knows that juve midfield is the weak point. and allegri played 4 defensive midfielders. that was always going to be a recipe for disaster. i swear everytime i see bentancur and arthur the field I swear they be trying to let the opposition score. allegri was better off playing a 4231 and going for the win. i mean you parking the bus and conceding 4 goals. you may as well go out and attack.

  5. Allegri is just a terrible coach. For over a decade I’ve been struggling to see how he’s regarded as a great. This guy used to make me wanna throw my phone against my TV during games and after a painful show for the eyes against teams like Catania, he’d shamelessly come out to praise the opponent, claiming they had something more than his team. He just simply can’t offer much. Well it will only get worse for him now, as days of winning trophies with defensive mindset are over!

  6. This team has ZERO creativity. Bodies in the middle that do nothing. Rovella (loanie) still with Genoa for 1 more year. We need him to finish this stint, hopefully Genoa stay up and he comes to us ready.

McKinnie, Bentancur, Kulusevki all don’t have 1 ounce of creativity between them.

On top of that a Manager here for his 2nd spell? What can go wrong? LOL. These never work out. An anti-football Manager that has this team play boring and says only Results matter and not the spectacle. Well 4-0 is hardly a Result.

McKinnie? Nice whiff at the end. Maybe spend more time in Training instead of trying to bed white girls. Give me Nicolò Fagioli instead. Instead he’s rotting in ‘B’. Faglioli would take his lunch money.

Axl Witsel is not going to solve anything so they can spare bringing him in. Just another player that will replace Aaron Ramsay. Always getting players past their Best Before Date. This is what Serie A has become. A dumping ground of once decent foreign players as well as 2nd rate foreigners, minus a few dozen.

When it was still 1-0, Loca’s ball over the top, no reason why at this level Morata couldn’t hit it first time on the volley. Instead he lets it bounce, now the GK is in front of him and he has no choice but to get under it to clear it past him. You just know years back Carlitos Tevez would have put that away.

Not that it matters, and I certainly won’t be losing sleep over this one, but CFC’s 1st goal should have never stood.

  7. Yes, Allegri – this team has limitations – YOU! How you can play Bentancur and Rabbiot together is simply baffling. Playing one of them is bad enough, playing both is just asking for a thrashing. They can’t pass, they get pushed off the ball too easily, they are undisciplined, they have no creativity, and above all else, they don’t have the heart to play for Juve. Our best midfielder today was Locatelli, but you substitute him off before the other two clowns. In January, there needs to be some transfer action or we’ll be playing Europa league next year:
    Out: Ramsay, Rabbiot
In: Vlahovic (move mountains if necessary), Zakaria to strengthen the midfield and bring back Fagioli or Rovella.
    In the summer:
Out: Bentancur, De Sciglio, Sandro, Morata, Rugani, Szczęsny
In: Donnarumma, Goosens, Milenkovic Savic, Nikola Milinkovic,
Juventus needs to once again recruit technically gifted, physically strong and mentally touhg footballers, not duds who don’t have any of those qualities.

  8. You guys are not being realistic with all these player demands for a few simple reasons. Allegri will never give youth a chance. The only reason he plays De Ligt is because Chiellini is old, creaking and De Ligt earns too much. Agnelli will not allow him to be benched too often. Rovella and Fagioli will never see the light of day as Allegri only likes slow old men. Chiesa is being ruined and Pirlo knew how to use him. That is coming from a novice coach but one the best to ever wear a jersey. Finally Juventus have no money. Inter have no money. ACM have no money. Inter are at least smart enough to have a man that can sell quickly for the right price and reinvest wisely. All Juventus can do is free transfers and haggling for loan deals. This is not being critical but rather realistic. The league title will take another 4 years and forget the champions league. It is not happening in my life time and my son will also be waiting till he has children at the very minimum.

  9. Well, Juve wanted him back and they got him. Allegri, the master of slow ball. There is no dynamism to how Juve play, just slow and pragmatic. Players holding on to the ball too long and doing nothing with it. And he still has the audacity to say they played the ball vertically too quickly? Hello! Chelsea were dynamic and quick. Juve? Old lady style. And it does not matter what player (Vlahovic) they bring in because it is actually their approach and style of play that is backwards. No offense but they are back with a coach who plays a style of football that wins against the Torino‘s and Empoli‘s of Serie A but will always loose against the creme of Europe.

  10. I’m happy I’m a juve fan, but hiring dumb coaches is bad. The more they lose, the faster the change. Bring zidane now. This coach is so dumb he plays with midfielders that are afraid of the ball. Get Arthur in he is the only one with balls to at least give juve a touch. I rather play McKinney or betancourt in RB then cuadrado. But this coach is bad. And would somebody explain why is Morata playing. Please bench him. The funny thing is that it seems that nobody is saying anything at juve. Poor de light, chiesa and Arthur and locatelli and kulusevski, this coach is messing them up. Juve better learn if not they’ll be like Milan or Barcelona.

  11. He’s right about our limitations. Sarri/Pirlo never had a chance at realizing their visions with the players at their disposal. Our management (marotta/paratici/nedved) was/is to blame for the mess we’re in (rabiot/bentacur/mckennie/arthur etc). Tough scoreline, but our true colours were shown today. We’re wayyy off from a top EPL club. Wayyyy off.

All that said, allegri shouldn’t be congratulating the team on qualifying for the round of 16 after this result. It should be expected from Juve.

  12. And for the record, we haven’t really been anywhere near a top European club since calciopoli ~15 years ago….smh

  13. juve has got what it takes to be ontop, they have talented youngster but the coach is scared to gamble.i liked Pirlo coz he was not shy to use them.we loaned talented players and hope others will improve them, that’s a lame thinking.nature yourself!!!im sure if Pirlo was given another chance you have done better.im sure players like fogioli, rovella would have now intergrated to the team.we have talented under 23.look , juve were destroyed by academy products of chelsea.open your eyes and start to be real.we are regressing to be honest.brave decision are needed now.bring back Pirlo for the project to be laid a foundation.mr allegri will alwasy defend period.7-8 players are not worthy to wear juve jersey, just gold diggers or mercenaries

  14. The damage fabio paratici did to juventus wont be repaired easy.Leting all your top players leave for free to bring is half season wonders and shitty free agants is a dumb idea.On top of that cherubini is burbib money now for under 23 players and d first team got only locately. And lets just not forget english teams got their covid losses covered by”increase of tv rights money” in other words by english goverment so their top teams can bring in more english players ,and italian govermen is just hiting on italian teams now for transfer fees. Not only they dont help out but bring more troble its natural that italian teams will fall further behinde top teams in europe

  15. There was a complete difference in the pace of play between both teams. Juve slow with the ball, holding on to it too long. Bentancur and Rabbiot were dreadful. Sandro also I don’t think has played consistently. Have they even been playing consistently in Serie A? They just had no where near the speed required to challenge Chelsea in any way. Even Locatelli at times looked like he was just mentally chained unable to really unleash any pace with the ball or pressure properly. People on here just lumping all players on to a pile. What I saw was that Morata and McKinnie at times at least tried to pick up the pace of play but they were surrounded by players like Rabbiot and Bentancur who were on Sunday strolls. And if that little boy Dybala is going to be constantly injured, get rid of him. We don’t have proper backups and this is what it leads to. The team looked disjointed. You can’t have players playing in different ways and approaches it has to be 1 unit, all together in the same way but Allegri is a coach of individuals, his teams wring out 1 goal wins this way but this is what you get against better quality opposition. He has been fond out in Europe with his defensive, pragmatic style and Juve still went back to him. Dumb.

  16. Juve are in deep financial doo doo, None of those moves that frankie said would happen.
Heck, they’re probably going to lose Chiesa and Locatelli if they don’t make CL.
How the heck do you expect them to sell those scrubs for any money at all?
Plus, you can’t buy new players without earning money first, and posting 200M net losses ain’t gonna help with that. FFP will eat you alive.

Also wonder about the allegations that the Pjanic/Arthur deal was shady.

  17. “There were moments when we gave the ball away too cheaply by trying to make vertical passes too quickly rather than keeping the ball”

So his solution was to play even slower football !!

  18. Juv should get replacement for cuardrado.is a one leg player when opponent play ball to his right direction,he often struggle and loose balance.

  19. what a disaster. and i hate how allegri still using some noob players. if i were the coach at the moment, i had sold these players:

danilo, sandro, arthur, ramsey, mckennie (loan), bentancur, kulusevski, morata and bernardeschi. all these players sucks.

and had start with these players against chelsea 4-5-1:

perin, de winter, de ligt, bonucci, sandro -.- , cuadrado, rabiot, locatelli, fagioli, chiesa, dybala.

more youth and players with creativity

  20. I read all the comments. Most are spot on! The problem is not really the team or the mentality of the players.

ITS THE MENTALITY OF THE COACH. EVEN IF VHALOVIC COMES THIS SYSTEM IS DEAD AND ALLEGRI NEEDS TO REALIZE FAST. HE HAS GOOD WINGERS, AVERAGE MIDFIELDERS AND OKAY DEFENDERS BUT THE SYSTEM IS DEAD AND FLAT!!!!!

3-5-2 OR 4-5-1 THATS WHAT THIS TEAM HAS THE PLAYERS FOR. ALLEGRI WONT CRACK TOP FOUR OR GO FAR IN YHE UCL IF HE CONTINUES THIS SYSTEM. PERIOD!

  21. Blaming allegri is hilarious.

Juve or any Italian team for that matter aren’t among the top 15 strongest teams in Europe. Meanwhile Chelsea is easily top 5.

There is a huge difference in squad quality.

  22. Juve need to bring in someone like Goran Pandev..he’s shown with his football academy he knows how to bring football to a bigger stage! Goran would have scored a hat trick or more in this game. In Northern Moldova…he is a god and his academy is the stuff of legends. Please Allegri…get Goran..let’s hear it guys GORAN GORAN GORAN!!

  23. Goran! Goran! Goran! Ja ja ja ja ja!

4-0 is a way too many to swallow. I slept off waiting for the kick off only to wake after the game, and never regretted ever missing the game.

  24. As far as Managers are concerned, allow me to just add one thing.

It’s not all on Allegri but he does share blame.

But while people are now saying they should have kept Pirlo, keep in mind that Pirlo’s Assistant last year was ex-Juventino, Igor Tudor.

Look at Verona. They were horrible under Di Francesco (one of my fav players in the late 90’s) to start the year.

Tudor came in and they have been playing excellent. Undefeated in the last 5 and really since the change Verona have been the surprise of the season.
