Juventus coach Max Allegri complimented Massimiliano Irrati for ‘good refereeing’ during the defeat to Inter, despite Adrien Rabiot claiming they were ‘playing against 12 men.’

The Bianconeri were beaten 1-0 at the Allianz Juventus Stadium in Turin last night by a Hakan Calhanoglu penalty, which was retaken due to encroachment after the initial Wojciech Szczesny save.

As is tradition when someone had a bad news day, satirical television programme Striscia La Notizia send their correspondent with a Tapiro d’Oro award, representing a creature with a long face.

It is the fourth one that Allegri has received from the show.

“Defeats are part of football, we need to keep going because the season is not finished,” said Allegri.

“The top of the table is almost beyond reach now, but we need to be wary of Jose Mourinho’s Roma who are right behind us, and also Fiorentina in the Coppa Italia semi-final.”

The coach was asked specifically about the performance of referee Irrati and the VAR, as Juventus fans claim they should’ve had a penalty for a push on Denis Zakaria that looked to be on the line.

Instead, the VAR stuck with the original award of a free kick outside the area.

“Irrati did very well, he refereed well. Every now and then decisions go one way, then they go the other,” replied Allegri.

Of course, he didn’t seem terribly happy at the time, flinging off his coat in rage on the touchline.

  1. @ryan Yes we believe what he is saying. Irrati was not the problem. That’s why he said “Irrati did very well, he refereed well” He did not mention VAR in his answer because they where the problem

  2. Irrati and VAR were equally responsible for this refereeing disaster. I’m not sure if Vlahovic still has any discs left in his spine given how many times he was cowardly hit from behind by Skriniar who did not receive any yellows for those in the back challenges. In any other league Martinez would have been sent off for a second bookable offence with his follow through challenge on Chiellini who was on the ground. Considering how forceful the kick in the face to Locatelli, Martinez could well have seen a straight red. The Zakaria foul was clearly in the penalty area. Given the free ride Inter have had this year by the referees and VAR, it looks like another paper scudetto is coming their way alongside their 2005 one.

  3. @frankie – I don’t think there was enough contact for a straight red but could have been close. Second yellow was close but decided to err in a warning which lautaro listened and calmed down which was the ref intention. Rabiot second yellow was more there but I’m glad the game didn’t get ruined by a red card for either side. In regards to skriniar, football is a physical game, he played amazing. Juve players on the other hand constantly threw themselves to the ground, vlahovic and de ligt the main culprit. Along with the pen claim, I think ref only gave it as he thought it was outside the box otherwise he would have called play on. A free should be a free anywhere on the pitch but def on the softer side. Bastoni didn’t clatter him, he was leaning into him trying to shepherd the ball. Player knew he was near the box and threw himself forward. No place in football for diving!!

  4. Credit to Allegri for not complaining, he knows these discussions are futile.
Referees always make mistakes, especially now with VAR, you can see it in other leagues as well.
But in Italy unfortunately, they make a lot of fuss about it.
