Max Allegri is emerging as a new contender to replace Gennaro Gattuso on the Napoli bench, but it’s also rumoured he encouraged their union in the first place.

Multiple sources are confident the rapport between Gattuso and President Aurelio De Laurentiis is beyond repair, so the coach will leave at the end of this season, even if they qualify for the Champions League.

The favourite to take over is Luciano Spalletti, with other candidates including Spezia boss Vincenzo Italiano and Verona’s Ivan Juric.

An intriguing situation is now developing, with Sky Sport Italia reporter Francesco Modugno telling Radio Kiss Kiss that Allegri is first choice.

After Maurizio Sarri left Napoli and went to Juve within a couple of years of their Scudetto battle, Allegri could also come full circle.

It seems De Laurentiis is in regular contact with Allegri and the pair are good friends, the report even going so far as to suggest it was Allegri who told ADL to go for Gattuso when Carlo Ancelotti was sacked.

The former Juve boss also seemingly urged De Laurentiis not to fire Gattuso in January 2021.
