Juventus coach Max Allegri again outlined why he is so wary of launching young players. ‘There is a tendency in Italy to consider kids champions after two or three games.’

The 54-year-old tactician has been criticised by many Bianconeri supporters for not making the most of the youth academy or Under-23 side, instead moving more senior players into unusual positions to fill the gaps during their injury crisis.

While more in the media are blaming the lack of youth playing regularly in Serie A sides for the failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, Allegri takes a very different approach.

“In recent years I’ve noticed there is a tendency in Italy to consider kids like champions after two or three games, but that is rushing them ahead of schedule,” Allegri said at the Festival of Youth in Gaeta.

“A 20-year-old player can never have the maturity of a 28-year-old.”

The Juventus boss is also no fan of social media when in football, especially for the players.

“It’s just one more way of conditioning the players. Sometimes it’s useful to pull yourself out of these situations.”

Having said that, Allegri does have a social media account and famously created his own hashtag on Twitter after a last-gasp victory with #Fiuuuuu!

That is the Italian spelling of ‘Phew!’

  1. And so the second rate, past their prime players you overpay for are a better investment? Tell that to Coman who got tired of Allegri’s rigid tactics, went to Bayern and won the CL while Allegri is back again at Juve, groveling and failing again. I agree that players are often over hyped. But it is a fallacy and weakness in today’s game if you don’t take some calculated risks to integrate youth into the game. As the saying goes, Fortune favors the bold.

  2. Liar doesn’t know what he is talking about. Juve fail year after year with maturity seems like the only other option. Another traitor to italy surfaces this is why we are having trouble on the national teams.

  3. I would also lay some blame at all those in football that hype up stats and analysis as if they are guarantees about the future.

  4. For someone who is often labelled as being intelligent by those in the game, Allegri can be extremely foolish.

Whatever happened to judging each young player on a case-by-case basis? To judge somebody primarily by their age and not their character and their qualities is very prejudicial and ignorant. There are many “28 year old” players who still behave like a child. There are also many veterans who still make a number of mistakes on pitch.

Allegri’s words are a kick in the teeth for all the young players at the club and those who work in the youth sectors.

  5. That’s exactly the Italian mentality. He should go to Spain and say that. They’ll laugh his butt out of the country.

  6. I don’t see any Allegri fan boys here. but if you are on this page . Come take a closer look at his mindset
    Fossil Mindset

  7. Gravenberch is very smart to have accepted the move to Bayern and £28M is a bargain in this current day and age. He knew Juventus and PhD Max would ruin him like Kulu and many others before him like Coman.

  8. Allegri makes a good point. Most 20 year olds are too immature and led by their agents to be consistently good at the top level. Exceptions for Juve are De Ligt, Chiesa and Vlahovic. They’re young but have mature heads. Kean blows hot and cold. Allegri stuck with him but he hasn’t stepped up. He couldn’t even step up at Everton but when there’s no pressure, e.g. in a 1 team league at PSG, he was good. Coman is the same…it’s great when you have extraordinary players around you like Leva and Co, but not when it’s McKennie and Ramsey. Allegri is slowly shipping out the deadwood to make room for quality players who’ll take the pressure off the young ones having to be exceptional (and then burning out). We’ve had far too many flash in the pan players in Italy because the media is hysterical (whether they win or lose).

  9. Allegri is such a dinosaur best thing juve can do is bin him off, coward and a traitor the guy is as weak as his hairline

  10. It’s a crime against Italian football that players like Fagioli are running around in Serie B. Wouldn’t happen in Spain, Germany or even England. As much as Allegri is a dinasour, the blame also rests with the club’s hierarchy. They need to plot a clear path for the future that involves developing youth players to become first team players, not pawns in the lower-level transfer market. The club then needs to ensure that managers like Allegri follow the roadmap or leave the club.

  11. Get used to it the fossil is here for another 3 years and the club is a joke compared to yesteryear. Sacking Sarri and Pirlo for CL failure in the knockouts is ok. But the fossil lost 0-3 and gets the full backing of the management. Absolute joke and he now states that he will not go with youth. Do not be shocked if Sandro stays put as no club in their right mind would take him and shifting players has been their achilles heel due to big wages that no sane club will foot the bill.

  12. Allegri…tell that to AC Milan, a team with a defense that’s way way younger and hands down better than his ancient defense
