Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri explains why Leonardo Bonucci stepped up for a late penalty kick against Salernitana instead of Dusan Vlahovic.

The Serbia international had taken Juventus’ only penalty kick this season in the opening Serie A match against Sassuolo on August 15 and many thought he would step up against Salernitana last night.

Instead, Leonardo Bonucci took the responsibility and despite being denied by Luigi Sepe, he eventually scored the equaliser from the rebound.

Max Allegri explained why Bonucci took the penalty kick instead of Vlahovic last night.

“It was an important penalty and it was better to let Bonucci take it,” the coach said at a post-match press conference, as quoted by Gazzetta.

Vlahovic has only missed one penalty kick in Serie A. It happened in Fiorentina‘s 6-0 win over Genao on January 2022 when Salvatore Sirigu saved his penalty attempt.

The Serbia international has scored 18 penalty kick goals, including one with Juventus against Sassuolo this past August. Bonucci has netted three goals from the spot in Turin, missing the first one last night.
