Max Allegri believes Juventus beat Torino with one of their best performances of the season so far and explains where Moise Kean and Matthijs de Ligt need to improve.

The Bianconeri struggled in the first half with only 39 per cent possession, but introducing Juan Cuadrado and moving Federico Chiesa to centre-forward made the difference.

Chiesa assisted Manuel Locatelli for the crucial goal, in off the inside of the upright at the 86th minute, and Juve kept a clean sheet after conceding for 20 consecutive Serie A matches, going back to March.

“We were a bit too static in the first half, especially down the right, and Kean did better towards the end of the first half, but we lost possession a few too many times,” Allegri told DAZN.

“Toro lost intensity as time wore on and we moved more, so the more you move, the more you make the opposition lose sight of reference points.

“Locatelli settled in well, he can improve a great deal. He is beginning to vary the moves, so short and long passes, he just needs to improve his positioning.”

There has been a definite change of pace and temperament in the Juventus squad over the last few games, including the 1-0 Champions League victory over Chelsea.

“After the break for international duty, we discovered the desire to defend when we needed to defend and attack when we needed to attack.

“It would’ve been disappointing not to win a game after that performance which, after the first half against Milan, I feel was our best of the season.”

Kean is the only available centre-forward with injuries to Paulo Dybala and Alvaro Morata, yet again he only lasted one half today before being replaced.

“Apart from losing the ball a couple of times early on, he did quite well. He is devastating when he runs at the goal, but is working on his technique, his first touch and control.”

Allegri had said before the season began that players like Matthijs de Ligt and Dejan Kulusevski were still too young to be key figures.

“It’s a matter of experience. De Ligt is a good player, despite being 22 years old, and let’s not forget he came from a different type of football, so in Italy he needs to improve his reading of the situations and his aggression in marking. He’s coming off good performances and can only improve.

“The same goes for Kulusevski, we have talented young players and are working to improve them individually. They have the advantage of playing with teammates like Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci.”

Bonucci was on the bench today, although he spent most of the game giving advice on the touchline. How did the defender do as a makeshift assistant manager?

“He told me there was another slot left to make a substitution, I said no, that’ll give them another 30 seconds to play! Rather than great players, I think Leonardo has matured so much and become calmer and more relaxed with the responsibility he holds towards the group. On the one hand, it’s positive he is maturing, on the other it means he’s getting older!”

5 thought on “Allegri: ‘Best Juventus of the season’”
  1. It’s too early for juventus to gather momentum. I hate to say allegri will dominate serie a again. This season will be competitive. Fonza milan

  2. The fact that allegro thinks Juventus played well in this game and against Chelsea gives you an idea how out of you touch with reality he is.

  3. We just need to be patient. We will soon offload the dead wood such as Ramsay who has made no effort to learn the language, and then we will slowly get one or two more players who will make the difference. The haters are not being realistic. No team can win forever. We were bound to lose the title at some point. I hate that it was Inter but their finances are even worse than ours. We will not win nothing this year, but 2-3 years is more realistic. Liverpool went 30 years without winning the premier league and then they won it and the CL. Inter went nearly 20 years without winning before they cooked up their scheme to send us down. We have been hit hard with revenue due to the pandemic. Once the stadiums are at full capacity, then we will begin to reheel and recoup some money. We will be back but I am glad the league is more competitive as it means everyone will have to raise their standards.

  4. are u kidding me? Juventus trademark since forever is their DEFENSE and the real stars of juventus always the CB and or DMC/regista.
if u think supporting juventus mean u will have attacking football then u supporting the wrong team.
we appreciate cleansheet more then winning 3 – zero.
paratici & nedved ideas almost destroyed juve when they bought penaldo to force juve to chance their treadmark.
and it became a disaster for 3 penaldo season. none UCL final, struggled and lost the seri A champ.
successful coaches in juve history none of them playing attacking football.
lippi, ancelotti, capello, conte, allegri, all of them playing like the real juventus, the European giant or expert in defensive and tactical games.
this is also why its rare in juventus to have a top scorer striker or a ballon dor winner, because the rest of the world think the only cool thing in football is attacking football.
hey, italia won the euro if u forgot to read the news lol.
    uero goes to rome.
not because attacking play but defensive solidity.
its useless to have one of the best striker, the flashy winger etc.
    just look at england?
portugal with penaldo not even qualified for the next stage.
so sht up about playing attacking football.
Juventus defensive games is an art.
    cattenacio remember that terms?
because winning is not matter,it is the only matter.
    juventus is about winning.
go supporting inter or lazio if u like attacking football and stop trying to badmouthing juve for our identity and defensive mastery.

  5. This guy should write a manuscript. Nobody has time to read your preaching and ranting. We all know the Juventus motto winning is the only thing that matters. That was 20th Century and worked for the last 10 years in Italy. In Europe teams play a pressing game full stop. Tell me which defensive team last won the CL ? That is the issue with this typical Italian mentality to be stuck in the past, hence why your stadiums are all third world compared to Germany, England and Spain. Europes biggest clubs play 5G whilst most Italian clubs are still using 2G in European competitions.
