City were the first of the 12 clubs to have officially announced they are leaving the project, less than 48 hours after it was announced.

Now Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur have all confirmed they will not be participating.

It would leave just Juventus, Milan, Inter, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.

Meanwhile, Barcelona had a clause in their contract allowing them to pull out without paying a penalty if it was not voted by the Assembly.

“Liverpool Football Club can confirm that our involvement in proposed plans to form a European Super League has been discontinued.

“In recent days, the club has received representations from various key stakeholders, both internally and externally, and we would like to thank them for their valuable contributions.”

The statements were all brief, but released almost simultaneously at 23:00 UK time.

“As a result of listening to you and the wider football community over recent days we are withdrawing from the proposed Super League. We made a mistake, and we apologise for it,” wrote Arsenal.
