"The Europa League holds a very high value," the 24-year-old told the club's match programme. "In my opinion, only losers underestimate certain competitions. The winners never do.
"Roma have never won this trophy and there is only one thing that a player at a club with this kind of history must do: win.
"It will be a difficult game against Viktoria Plzen, but we will give our all. We are focused and are thinking about winning everything, the title and the Europa League.
"For us it is important to finish first in the group, and it would also be a signal that would make us gain the respect of our opponents."
The Brazilian made the move to Rome this summer, but how has he settled in so far?
"I am very happy and so is my wife who moved here to be with me. We found a great town, with wonderful people, who are always upbeat.
"There are several similarities with Brazil. I'm glad I chose Roma. And of course you eat very well here!”
