Milan defender Alex believes “we’re a strong team” and targets Champions League qualification.

The Rossoneri have taken nine points from their opening five games, and got their first away win of the campaign at Udinese on Tuesday.

“We did well in the first half, a little less well in the second,” the Brazilian told Milan Channel when asked for his analysis of the 3-2 win.

“The Coach spoke to us, and we analysed the reasons for what happened in the second half to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

“It wasn’t an easy match, we lost at Friuli last year. We have to continue to grow.

“We’re a strong team, and next year we have to play in the Champions League.”

The Diavolo defence has come in for criticism this season, having failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their opening matches, but Alex sees positive signs.

“There’s competition between us centre-backs, but those who are out always talk to those who are on the pitch. We’re a team and we have to help each other. You win and lose together.

“[Davide] Calabria is doing well, it’s never easy to play for a team like Milan. Also [Mattia] De Sciglio, [Rodrigo] Ely and [Alessio] Romagnoli are doing well.”

Milan face a second away game in a row this weekend, when they visit Genoa, and the former Chelsea man is targeting all three points.

“The Genoa fans provide great support, and it’s never easy to play at Marassi,” Alex warned.

“But we know what we have to do to win and continue our growth. We have to go onto the pitch with conviction, and to win, like we did in Udine.”
