Raul Albiol has thanked Napoli for ‘six unforgettable years’ after joining Villarreal and promises to come back to celebrate if they win the Scudetto.

Albiol completed his transfer to Villarreal on Thursday after a six-year spell at Napoli that yielded a Coppa Italia and Supercoppa but no Serie A title.

“These have been six incredible years. I thank all the fans for the support they gave me,” the defender told Radio Kiss Kiss.

“Only the Scudetto dream was missing, but I hope it comes true eventually. Napoli have a great future. They have a great team, with a great Coach. Hopefully we’ll win something soon.

“Certainly next season it’ll be a two-horse fight with Juventus for the Scudetto. As for Sarri at Juve, nothing is taken for granted in football.

“There have been so many players who have moved between teams who hate each other.

“It doesn’t surprise me. Everyone must be able to make their own decisions, and they must be respected.”

The 33-year-old was then asked about the his replacement Kostas Manolas and a potential deal for James Rodriguez.

“Each new player must keep the level high so Napoli can be competitive on several fronts,” he continued.

“It was difficult to leave Napoli and change clubs because of the great affection of the fans. These have been six unforgettable years.

“If the Scudetto arrives, I’ll come back to celebrate. Napoli deserve it because they’re on the right track.

“Fabian has his head screwed on. He has everything to become a world-class player. He’ll give lots to Napoli in the future.

“Thank you very much to the whole city of Naples, which has given me affection. I salute and thank the whole club, the President De Laurentiis and my teammates.

“You’ll have one more fan in Spain.”
