The former Italy and Milan midfielder announced before the summer his intention to resign as the Italian Football Federation’s Vice-President, with it rumoured that a director’s role with the Rossoneri was in line.
However, following Italy’s early World Cup elimination and Giancarlo Abete’s resignation as FIGC President, Albertini has faced calls from clubs and Coaches in Serie A to stand as a candidate to replace him.
Even in initially playing down these assertions, the 42-year-old has been assumed as likely to stand and has now called a Press conference for this afternoon.
There, it is believed that Albertini will confirm his intention to be considered for August 11’s election, against Carlo Tavecchio.
However, it is understood that Tavecchio, currently President of the National Amateur League, remains favourite to succeed Abete, for apparently holding as much as 60 per cent of the current vote.
