Albania coach Edy Reja commented on Italy’s failure to qualify for the upcoming World Cup and why it’s good that Roberto Mancini didn’t resign.

The two nations will play in a friendly match tomorrow, giving both squads the opportunity to continue working on their chemistry despite their absences from the tournament in Qatar. It’ll be a painful six-week break for Italy, who have now missed out on the last two consecutive World Cups, an unthinkable scenario a decade ago.

Speaking in a press conference, Reja first discussed his tactical plan and any changes ahead of Albania’s friendly with Italy.

“The formation is always the same, it is the formation that has given us the most guarantees. With this system the players feel very safe and I don’t think I will change, then maybe it can happen in the match.

“We are missing some historical players, Djimsiti would have served me well in this match given his international experience. I am missing a few people, but those who will take the field will definitely give 100%.

“I already used the 3-5-2 in Napoli 15 years ago. Now Conte does it, Mancini does it… I started 15 years ago and I also congratulated Mancini because with the three-man defence he really found the balance.

“Then some performances came out well, others badly, but this is a system that has given me satisfaction.”

He spoke about Italy’s failure to qualify for the World Cup and what the future of the national team holds.

“It was a bit of a disappointment for everyone, then there are moments like the penalties and it went badly for Italy. I’m very sorry and it’s a good thing that Mancini has decided to stay and continue the project.

“I am convinced he will do very well, then there is this teenager, Pafundi, of whom I hear very good things. With him, Miretti and Fagioli, they will slowly do well, they’re working for the future and I hope they can also achieve other goals because they deserve it.”

He touched on which team he’ll be cheering for in tomorrow’s game.

“You know my affection for Albania and when they don’t play against Albania I cheer for Italy. But tomorrow I certainly won’t cheer Italy, it would go against my interests….

“If it came out a 3-3 or a 4-4 it would be extraordinary. It’s a celebration for us, a better friendly I couldn’t expect. I am particularly excited, tomorrow when I hear the two anthems I will be moved, for sure.”

Finally, Reja discussed what Albania can take from their friendly against Italy.

“Yes, it can be the right match, but playing against Italy is not easy… It’s definitely a match that can give us important indications, it’s a match we are happy to play. Let’s see how far we have come, although I would have liked to have the full line-up.”

Albania will face Italy tomorrow before playing Armenia in a friendly on November 19.
