AIC protests the introduction of this year’s limit of 22 players in the squad, a rule the Lega Pro, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, introduced to safeguard the financial sustainability of the clubs.

“The Italian Players' Association, having acknowledged the impossibility of reaching an agreement with the Lega Pro on the regulation of the playing time of young people and the abolition of the lists of players that can be used in Serie C, confirms that the players will not take to the pitch on the first day of the championship,” the statement read.

“The protest stems from the inexplicable backward step of the Lega Pro, compared to the regulations in force in the previous season, relating to the reintroduction of substantially mandatory restrictions on the use of a maximum number of professional footballers.”
