Daniele Rugani’s agent reveals how many clubs wanted the Juventus-owned defender and how quickly the move to Cagliari was decided.

The defender is owned by Juventus and had gone to France with Stade Rennais, but interrupted that experience early for a loan with Cagliari instead.

“The possibility of a return to Italy had emerged a few days before the transfer, and they were not just shows of interest, but very important requests,” Davide Torchia told TMW Radio.

“We had decided with Daniele to stay at Rennes due to a pact we made with them, to help the team. Unfortunately, he was injured throughout the first six months, something that had never happened before in his life, and he wanted to repay the club for their faith in him.

“Over the last two days, the insistence of the proposals made him think, some coaches really wanted him and it developed from there.”

Cagliari won the race eventually, but they were by no means the only Serie A side interested in Rugani.

“Parma and Torino were looking for him quite some time before the final days of the market. Marcello Carli knows him well and Roberto D’Aversa also showed strong interest.

“When moving in January, the financial aspect is not the most important thing, the fundamental element is the project. We had decided to remain at Rennes, Parma chose Mattia Bani from Bologna, and the same goes for Torino.

“Bologna had a more advantageous financial offer, but then decided to focus on a different role to reinforce their squad. It was a race against time for Cagliari to get the deal done on deadline day and we finished all the paperwork with 20 minutes to spare.”
